Vine Hill Manzanita
There are a number of named varieties of this dependable manzanita shrub from Sonoma county. Most varieties except ‘Sentinel’ grow low and spreading. The branches root as they touch ground offering good erosion control on hillsides. The reddish-brown bark peels back exposing smooth bark underneath. Evergreen with dark green glossy leaves and clusters of tiny white bell shaped flowers. Full sun on coast light shade inland.
Wildlife value: The word manzanita means “little apple”. Birds love to eat the berries. Hummingbirds sip nectar from the blossoms.
