aralia californica ‘Californica spikenard’

Elk Clover

A bright green leaved herbaceous shrub 4-5 feet, found along streams, in the Redwood forest and on shaded slopes. Blooms July-August with small creamy white flower clusters followed by large clusters of juicy purple/black berries. Works well in a woodland garden with ‘Douglas Iris,’ ‘Dogwood,’ and ‘Western Sword Ferns.’ Best in light shade with some water.

Wildlife value: The fleshy fruits and their seeds are eaten by thrushes and by other birds as well as by a few mammals.
