Heteromeles Arbutifolia

Toyon

A dense evergreen shrub found throughout California in a diversity of environments. Shrub forms are often 6-10 feet but in the wild may get up to 25 feet. Thick leathery dark green leaves are adorned with clusters of creamy white flowers June-July followed by large clusters of bright red berries from fall to winter. Full sun to light shade, fairly drought tolerant but will take water. A very adaptable plant.

Wildlife value: Birds relish the berries and bees favor the flowers.
